The Society of Authors have produced some useful guidelines
on planning school visits.
I'm a member of “the other SAS”. This stands for
“Scattered Authors Society” and is a loose grouping
of children’s writers and illustrators who live all over
the UK. We get together as a group once or twice a year (not always
the same people) and have some local meetings too. It’s
a really nice bunch of people and if you want to know who is in
the group you can click on this
link .

who are mates of mine.
If you're looking for other books to read, try these sites:

This is my own review site, set up in 1999 to provide a forum for the discussion of children's books by the people who write them. The Armadillo team is composed of professional volunteers from the children's book world who are dedicated to promoting children's fiction. We've now done away with subscriptions so the site is free to use (although donations are always welcome).
